Earlier this week I was playing around and trying to hook up my cell phone to my Powerbook (to act as a fax modem). I followed an article from Apple (see it here) and discovered then something wasn’t working! So, I started to read the forums and discovered bits and pieces and started to play, repairing permissions etc… I even reinstalled some stuff form Panther, let me explain that my Tiger disc is in storage in the UK, not with me
I called in some help and played with some more files, but it just didn’t work. As I didn’t really need to fax anyway, more seeing if it would work, I decided to leave it, and update when my copy of Tiger arrives in the USA with the rest of my stuff.
Later on I wanted to check something on my Airport, and discovered that Airport Admin Utility was missing from Utilities. On closer inspection, so were other things
“What had I done??”
I was left with two choices, downgrade to Panther or buy another copy of Tiger. I recalled reading that downgrading isn’t always easy, things like mailboxes are hard to do, and I am one for the easy life.
Therefore, I made the decision to buy another copy of Tiger, so off to the Apple store I went.
I thoroughly backed everything up onto an external drive, in two different locations, just to be safe! Then did an Erase & Install using the Tiger disc, this went very smoothly and I spent all day dragging data back to my Powerbook. When I had finished I found that I had recovered 20GB, yes 20GB, of space. Which I was pleased with as my disc was getting full.
I think, but don’t know for sure, that this was due to no Previous System Folders, no Classic installed, no iLife ’04, ’05 & ’06 upgrades, etc…
Well, I am back up and running now, data all restored and a much emptier hard disc, oh and I have two copies of Tiger now! Roar, Roar!
