New themes on Language Pages at iWebUserSites

Its been a while since my last entry, anyway I just wanted to let people know that I have changed the theme / layout of the “Web sites in other languages” pages on http://www.iWebUserSites.com.

I just felt like a change was in order, something a little different to the white pages that I have used forever! I didn’t want to get too fancy, just nice and simple, a new color scheme and I have resized the text.

I hope that people do like the new look and feel, please feel free to comment. I have some other ideas of things that I would like to do. My favorite idea is to store the sites in mySQL and dynamically display them based on the page selected, but there are two problems with that. Firstly I don’t have the knowledge of mySQL and secondly time is a factor in learning it, although I do feel that once I have, then maintaining the site would be much faster. It could also make for a much more searchable usable interface.

willg4pb.com is updated – You may have noticed the new look!

 

Over the last few days I have been updating this site, it all started with some silly idea I had about playing with the iWeb XML templates. As well as a desire for a change in appearance, hence the new look

I have also renamed some pages and added some new ones, see the How2 page, I hope that its a little better laid out than the old page. This does mean that if for any reason you have bookmarked any of my pages, you might want to check them out.

 

One downside of all this tweaking is that once again I have managed to lose all of my comments, not that there were many. Sorry about that

 

It started with iCal!

Having ben asked about adding an iCal calendar to an iWeb page and seeing the question on the forum I decided to set about finding ways to do it.

First of all I wrote a How2 article about this, and a spin off was a little demo site - See Calendar

During the process I realised that I needed to do something about frames, new to me but they seemed doable. This mean’t another How2 article – See iFrames

I also thought about opening html files, maybe some people dont do things because they are unsure, so guess what? Another How2 article – See Opening html files

With all of the excitement I looked at the How2 page and thought to myself, “this needs reorganising”, so thats what I did.

This is the question!

After much playing I seem to have comments, oh no, no I dont. Wait, yes I do!

 

Well after much playing I hope that it is working again!

 

Not really sure what the criteria is so add remove comments, luck perhaps? Anyway, I now know that if you switch of comments and publish, you lose all of your previous comments!!

After the iWeb 1.1 update……

Well I thought that I would write a little about my fun with the iWeb 1.1 update. Fun, did I really say that??

It hasn’t all been bad, I run a multitude of sites from my .mac account and like to play with iWeb, which is why I have this helpful site and rather dismal blog

I also have multiple user acconuts on my Mac, only one of which is an Admin account, the rest are stanard, and these are the accounts I use on a day to day basis (I will go into the reasons on antoher day!). Suffice to say that I wasn’t aware of the iWeb update for 24 hours, it came, upset people and I read all about it. Not one to back down I decided to go for it.

The first thing I did was backup all of my domain files, I have one for each site. Then I stuffed them into an iWeb 1.0.1 folder, just so I knew where and what they are. Then I downloaded and installed the update, launched iWeb and republished this site, sweet! I am live with iWeb 1.1, next I added a couple more addresses to iWebUserSites and uploaded that too.

I was beginning to wonder what all the fuss was about. Anyway someone asked a question on the forum about creating a Comments only page, and I thought, I can do that, so I did, you can see the results on my Test_Site. Not the prettiest way of doing things, but a means to an end. So far 100% success, 3 out of 3, I am cookin’.

Next I moved onto my family site, 377MB of fat bloated domain file, next weeks task is to put it on a diet! Anyway this site contains loads of photos and it just didn’t want to play. I tried many tricks from the forum and none wanted to work. After 24 hours, I settled for an easy life and peaceful homelife, I installed iWeb onto my external drive (running Panther) and then upgraded to 1.0.1, I still had a copy that I kept when doing some testing for 11Mystics. Next, I deletedthe 1.1 site from my iDisk, hit Publish All to .Mac and up it went. No problems at all, first time every time!

 

Not to give up, I am back on this site about to publish with 1.1, if it goes up, then I will add comments straight away

So, over the weekend I bought a domain name for the database. Moved the hosting to my .mac account and forwarded and masked the address. I am just wanting to keep it tidy, after all you can see my .mac details at the top of this page.

 

Lots of responses and lots of work to add sites and even the new keyboard style search!

 

This was all done during the week starting 24 April, not just on the one day!

 

A database of iWeb sites is conceived

Having seen a question on the iWeb forum about being able to easily search for other iWeb created sites, my database idea is conceived.

 

Time to go through the the Share your site thread on the forum and find url’s and email addresses.

 

A first version of the site is posted on a free hosting server. 

Panther Testing for 11Mystics

Well for once I find myself being usefull. Suzanne Boben of 11Mystics has asked me to do some testing of her new Aqua Templates. I must say that they are very cool and Suzanne has done a great job with them. Just for fun I installed them on a Panther powered external drive. This was good but meant that Cyclosaurus had to do some tweaking of his Installer. In the end we got it to work! Yippee! 

iWeb arrives

With great excitement I rushed to the Apple store and bought my copy of iLife 06, and with it came iWeb!

My day is now full, at this point I’m not working, career break (I will explain more at some point in the future). Anyway back to iWeb, yeah baby, my new toy. My first task was to create a site for all of the photos my partner and I had taken on our travels during 2005. A site for the friends and family, but the url was looooong, so I forwarded a domain name that I had bought last week! OK so I had already decided that I needed one
