iweb-11.jpg

Well I thought that I would write a little about my fun with the iWeb 1.1 update. Fun, did I really say that??
It hasn’t all been bad, I run a multitude of sites from my .mac account and like to play with iWeb, which is why I have this helpful site and rather dismal blog :-(
I also have multiple user acconuts on my Mac, only one of which is an Admin account, the rest are stanard, and these are the accounts I use on a day to day basis (I will go into the reasons on antoher day!). Suffice to say that I wasn’t aware of the iWeb update for 24 hours, it came, upset people and I read all about it. Not one to back down I decided to go for it.
The first thing I did was backup all of my domain files, I have one for each site. Then I stuffed them into an iWeb 1.0.1 folder, just so I knew where and what they are. Then I downloaded and installed the update, launched iWeb and republished this site, sweet! I am live with iWeb 1.1, next I added a couple more addresses to iWebUserSites and uploaded that too.
I was beginning to wonder what all the fuss was about. Anyway someone asked a question on the forum about creating a Comments only page, and I thought, I can do that, so I did, you can see the results on my Test_Site. Not the prettiest way of doing things, but a means to an end. So far 100% success, 3 out of 3, I am cookin’.
Next I moved onto my family site, 377MB of fat bloated domain file, next weeks task is to put it on a diet! Anyway this site contains loads of photos and it just didn’t want to play. I tried many tricks from the forum and none wanted to work. After 24 hours, I settled for an easy life and peaceful homelife, I installed iWeb onto my external drive (running Panther) and then upgraded to 1.0.1, I still had a copy that I kept when doing some testing for 11Mystics. Next, I deletedthe 1.1 site from my iDisk, hit Publish All to .Mac and up it went. No problems at all, first time every time!

Not to give up, I am back on this site about to publish with 1.1, if it goes up, then I will add comments straight away :-)

Fingers crossed  :-)

See the iWeb 1.1 spiel, as you can see I have added the ability for you good folks to add a comment to my blog.

Please be nice to me :-)

Thanks

blog_redirect.jpg

Having responded to a recent question on the iWeb forum saying that I was going to put a page up. I thought that I better had!

So I have added two pages, visit the How2 page to learn more:
The first being on how to redirect from a homepage page.
The second is a quick description of how to use a navigation link in iWeb to create a redirecting page/link.

Earlier this week I was playing around and trying to hook up my cell phone to my Powerbook (to act as a fax modem). I followed an article from Apple (see it here) and discovered then something wasn’t working! So, I started to read the forums and discovered bits and pieces and started to play, repairing permissions etc… I even reinstalled some stuff form Panther, let me explain that my Tiger disc is in storage in the UK, not with me :-(  I called in some help and played with some more files, but it just didn’t work. As I didn’t really need to fax anyway, more seeing if it would work, I decided to leave it, and update when my copy of Tiger arrives in the USA with the rest of my stuff.

Later on I wanted to check something on my Airport, and discovered that Airport Admin Utility was missing from Utilities. On closer inspection, so were other things :-(
“What had I done??”
I was left with two choices, downgrade to Panther or buy another copy of Tiger. I recalled reading that downgrading isn’t always easy, things like mailboxes are hard to do, and I am one for the easy life.

Therefore, I made the decision to buy another copy of Tiger, so off to the Apple store I went.
I thoroughly backed everything up onto an external drive, in two different locations, just to be safe! Then did an Erase & Install using the Tiger disc, this went very smoothly and I spent all day dragging data back to my Powerbook. When I had finished I found that I had recovered 20GB, yes 20GB, of space. Which I was pleased with as my disc was getting full.

I think, but don’t know for sure, that this was due to no Previous System Folders, no Classic installed, no iLife ’04, ’05 & ’06 upgrades, etc…

Well, I am back up and running now, data all restored and a much emptier hard disc, oh and I have two copies of Tiger now! Roar, Roar!

So, over the weekend I bought a domain name for the database. Moved the hosting to my .mac account and forwarded and masked the address. I am just wanting to keep it tidy, after all you can see my .mac details at the top of this page.

Lots of responses and lots of work to add sites and even the new keyboard style search!

This was all done during the week starting 24 April, not just on the one day!

Having seen a question on the iWeb forum about being able to easily search for other iWeb created sites, my database idea is conceived.

Time to go through the the Share your site thread on the forum and find url’s and email addresses.

A first version of the site is posted on a free hosting server.

taco-html-edit.jpg

Someone recommended Taco HTML Edit on the iWeb forum, so I downloaded it. Immediately I moved Text Wrangler to number 2. I think that Taco is much easier to read, maybe I just didn’t set up TW properly, but I am one who likes simplicity I didn’

t look to. But Taco shows me the html just how I want to see it, I have even updated the tools page to reflect this.

Lots of things added today, new pages and new tutorials.

1. A links page to some other iWeb resources and cool sites.
2. A How2 page added, giving tips on how to do things.
   a) MassReplaceIt – This is one great little app.
   b) 2 sites on 1 Mac, yes you can do it
   c) 2 macs and 1 site, read all about it here

3. New tabbed style browsing for the Inspector launched

blog_panther.jpgWell for once I find myself being usefull. Suzanne Boben of 11Mystics has asked me to do some testing of her new Aqua Templates. I must say that they are very cool and Suzanne has done a great job with them. Just for fun I installed them on a Panther powered external drive. This was good but meant that Cyclosaurus had to do some tweaking of his Installer. In the end we got it to work! Yippee!

Today I coughed up some money and bought another domain name. This time it was for this site, www.willg4pb.iwebusersites.com. I have been trying out some free hosting, but I’m really not happy with it. The ease of using domain forwarding to my .mac address just appeals to me. iWeb and .Mac work together so simply, why oh why was I trying something else.

There is no such thing as a free lunch!
